Customer Reviews

Office Great Again, Performance Boost, Marginal Feature Gain4 There is no question that I am a devoted Mac user and of Apple products in general. They help make my life easier. Despite that, many of my favorite applications for Mac are in Microsoft's Office suite. Microsoft knows how to make the best office software. Office 2011 is no exception. What's included? This particular version I chose includes Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, and Microsoft Excel. What's missing? This Home version is missing the brand new Outlook email client for Mac, that replaces the former Entourage application. It seems a bit sneaky of Microsoft not to include Outlook with the Home edition. One figures they thought this was the best way to force corporate business users who are on exchange servers and whatnot, to purchase the Business version of Office. Most of us, simply do not need Outlook on Mac. We have a great mail client included on every Mac. Plus, more and more people are simply using web based mail. Therefore, simply know, these Home editions do not include Outlook (or the former Entourage). Microsoft Word. Perhaps the most used application besides a browser? The look and feel of these Office 2011 Applications is not significantly different from Office 2008. However, there are two key differences. First, performance! Microsoft put a lot of effort into making the Office 2011 Applications run quicker on Mac. When the 2008 release came out, it was dreadfully slow. It improved somewhat over time in updates to the suite, but even in a fast Mac, it was impossible to describe Office 2008 as exactly fast. That is no longer the case. Office 2011 runs at the speed you expect it to. It is more mature software in terms of performance, and this will make dealing with the applications on a daily basis less frustrating. The applications launch quicker as well. The performance increase is fantastic. Second, Office 2011 for Mac has moved more towards the ribbon interface that is found on its Windows counterpart. The ribbon will have to grow on me. It's easy to customize and fairly easy to use, but it always feels a bit cluttered to me, when I have used it on a Windows machine. I am sure I will get over it. The positive is that users who go back and forth between Mac and Windows will find the interface closer, though not identical, than in the past. Word has new templates available, a new way to sort layers on your document, and enhanced editing opportunities. Excel has vastly upgraded charts and tables. They look appropriate for the year 2010. Automation is available via Visual Basic, and the enhanced editing opportunities can be used in Excel too. Finally, Powerpoint. Powerpoint is the universal presentation software people use in nearly every business or school where presentations are needed. The arrangement of layers on your slides has a new interface just like word. The performance increase is present in Powerpoint as well. The Presenter View has been enhanced. Powerpoint does seem like a step forward with this update, though Powerpoint is the one application that I actually prefer Apple's competitor, Keynote. The problem with Keynote is the compatibility with other computers. Therefore, unless you will be presenting a project from your own Mac, it is often the best bet, to simply use Powerpoint despite its weaknesses compared to Keynote. Overall, Office 2011 is another solid update from Microsoft. Office 2011 for Mac keeps the highly used Office applications available on Mac, and I am grateful for that. What I am most excited about is the performance increase. Office 2011 no longer makes me feel as though I am using an old computer. It runs as it should have ran all along. The interface has changed slightly with the introduction of a ribbon style. It works fine, and will simply take some time to become fully acclimated. The downside? The only downside to Office 2011 is that these applications were already very robust and capable. The performance increase was quite welcomed, but in terms of additional, useful features, you will have to look closely to find even a handful that you might use on a regular basis. It is simply hard for them to add significant features to applications that already work great. Recommended product for the performance increase, and to stay up to date with the best Office suite on Mac! A much better product than Office 2008 for Mac, But does not Ship with Email Client5 I've been supporting MS Office on Macs since the early 1990's and despite being on the Apple side of the MAC/PC fight, I can say little bad about Microsoft Office. About the only thing I can say is that I am a little disappointed that Microsoft does not keep parity between the Windows and Mac platforms. But, this release goes a long way toward fixing that, especially on the email client front. Right from the installer, you can see that this version is aesthetically a step forward over earlier incarnations of Office on the Mac. The application Icons, welcome page and template menus are all more elegantly designed. The main interfaces are pretty similar to the windows office so there is a fairly low learning curve. The tabbed menus are intuitive and easy to use. I have to admit, I would have been fine if they would have stopped with Word and Excel 5.1 for Mac. Both were solid solutions. I didn't think that Word needed to be both a great word processor and a mediocre web creation package and a barely passable page layout tool. I'm still not to excited about the html capabilities of Word, but I have spent some time playing with the layouts and templates for graphic projects and they are fairly impressive. I like the layers support, and as a quick father/son project, we created and printed menus for a mother appreciation meal using Word. It was Mac ease of use and productivity at its best. Some other improvements I see as useful are more robust charting in Excel, a general layout that more closely matches the windows interface (but happily not to the full Windows Ribbon layout which is not exactly intuitive), as well as overall performance, Messenger especially seems far less buggy than earlier versions. All the apps launch much quicker than their 2008 predecessors. Also I am glad that Visual Basic is supported again in the Mac version of Office, although I am not currently working in an environment that needs it (I would have loved to have it back three years ago.) By far, the best addition to the Mac Office suite is the new Outlook client for Mac. Unfortunately, it does not ship with this Home & Student version though. But I have used a friends work copy and it is heads and shoulders above the Entourage client. It worked seamlessly with his Exchange Server and finally offers a mail client for the Mac that is on par with Outlook for Windows. Supposedly you can purchase an upgrade, but when I click that link now it comes up to a page not found message. All in all, this is a worthwhile upgrade and a worthy step forward to a core software suite. The main problem with the home and student version is the lack of the new Outlook client. Great new features - email functionality is gone2 First off, there is no doubt that the user interface of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel have been improved and they are more useful than ever before. That's the good news. You can get to all the commands more easily, and you can format your documents more easily. The auto-templates that are available when you start the program are more practical and easier to get around and navigate. You can look elsewhere for detailed descriptions of functionality. I recommend MacWorld. With all the nice new interface changes, I don't find that there is anything I can do in 2011 that I couldn't do in 2008. Advanced users may find some functionality that is here that wasn't before. I don't. Of course, your mileage may vary. Now the bad news. And, in my opinion, it's really bad. What was Microsoft thinking about when they decided to replace Entourage with Outlook, but make Outlook only available to buyers of the "Home and Business" Edition. This was a serious "downgrade" for many users. First I tried to get online to figure out if there was any upgrade, if, say, you buy the Home and Student edition but change your mind later. Nobody knew what I was talking about. I was transferred twice from one part of Microsoft to another, and I was cut off both times. Fortunately, the very helpful people on the other end (who were, in 3 out of 4 cases, clearly not in the USA), had given me the number to call if I got cut off. Everybody I talked to assured me that they understood my problem when clearly they did not... each time. The third number, and fourth person I talked to, tried to send me back to the first number I called. I waited till the next day and found my answer online. (The site that had my answer was down. This is understandable, as I received the product, by a fluke, one day earlier than the release date.) Incidentally, I heard the statement "Oh, you're on a MAC..." at least twice, perhaps three times. Microsoft clearly needs to study the way that Apple and companies like Apple provide customer service if they ever want to increase their share value back to where it should, in my opinion, be. So, here's what I learned. If you want email, you'll want to use your old version, that includes Entourage (if you have it) and if you buy the Home and Student Edition of Office 2011, now you have to pay extra to use Entourage's replacement, Outlook. (Or do what I do, an just use the new Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, but the old Entourage.) But it's worse than that. As of this writing, you can't just pay the difference and get a code for Outlook, even though it installs alongside the rest of the applications. No, you have to re-purchase the entire suite at a cost of nearly $300.00 US. If somebody from Microsoft reads this and it isn't true, please let me know, and I will amend my review. In this reviewer's opinion, the awful way they handled this trumps any new functionality and features in the program. Office 2008 was truly excellent, and had no real issues that I can point to. If you have it, stick with it as long as you can. Perhaps Microsoft will change their ridiculous pricing policy. If you truly don't need Microsoft's excellent email program, buy the Home and Student Edition. If you do need or want it, you need to get the Home and Business Edition. Do NOT get the Home and Student Edition. Also, if you are "upgrading" there is no discount. Although... if you bought the 2008 suite very recently, you will be able to download 2011 for free. Bravo for that. 5 stars for a greatly improved user experience minus 3 stars for sticking it to the customer, and removing Entourage or any email client from the Home And Student Edition. 2 stars. Sorry, Microsoft. You, of all companies, can do SO much better...
